Des Moines’ Urban Design Review Board will meet next week to consider preliminary designs for a convention hotel next to the Iowa Events Center and final review of the designs for Kum & Go LC’s headquarters in the Western Gateway downtown.
The meeting is set for 7:30 a.m. Tuesday in the City Council chambers at City Hall.
The 330-room convention center hotel, to be located at Fifth Avenue and Park Street, is a work in progress, and the design is still under review by Iowa Events Center Hotel Corp. The development team includes The Weitz Co., DLR Group, RDG Planning & Design and hotel consultant Ellis Katz. Hilton Worldwide Inc. will operate the hotel and is in on the design talks.
Backers are looking for ways to trim costs in the face of projections that the $100 million projected cost will rise by 5 to 7 percent.
The Urban Design Review Board’s preliminary review of the plans will precede votes by the Polk County Board of Supervisors and the Des Moines City Council.
The board will conduct its final review of the 120,000-square-foot, five-story Krause Gateway Center, the planned Kum & Go headquarters designed by international firm Renzo Piano Building Workshop, which has offices in New York, Genoa and Paris.
Led by Renzo Piano, the firm designed the New York Times building in New York City, the Art Institute of Chicago’s Modern Wing and the Rome Auditorium.
Krause Gateway Center’s modernistic features are expected to include a rooftop garden and park-like areas at ground level. Demolition on the site could begin as early as next week, and construction would be complete in early 2018, the company reported today. See the latest images, and read more details here.
