Urbandale schools to be recognized for 3rd grade reading progress
Gov. Terry Branstad will visit three Iowa school districts this month to learn how they have improved students’ reading skills by the end of third grade. Among the schools Branstad will visit is Olmsted Elementary School in the Urbandale Community School District on Thursday. He also will visit schools in Denison and Keystone. The districts each made progress in third-grade reading proficiency on both a brief universal screening assessment given three times a year to measure students’ reading skills and the most recent state assessment. Nearly 25 percent of Iowa third-graders did not read proficiently on the state test in 2014-15. Ensuring that students read proficiently by the end of third grade has been a top priority of the Branstad-Reynolds administration. In 2012, the Legislature adopted early literacy legislation to identify struggling readers starting in kindergarten and require schools to provide intensive assistance.
