Seven months after an EF3 tornado destroyed two of the seven manufacturing buildings at Vermeer Corp. in Pella, the third-generation company today announced it has selected Minneapolis-based M.A. Mortenson Co. to rebuild its production facilities. The new construction will replace the approximately 400,000 square feet of manufacturing space lost on July 19, 2018. Construction is expected to begin in May and be completed by the fall of 2020. “Mortenson is honored to be working with Vermeer, a company that has proven its resilience and passion for building a successful business in Central Iowa,” said Darin Knapp, Mortenson vice president of project development. Vermeer will use one of its own surface excavation machines to remove the cement pads that were part of the buildings destroyed in the tornado. Gresham Smith, based in Nashville, Tenn., was selected as the architect in January.
