VineMe prepares for test from Google

A Des Moines photo-sharing website is confident in its product, even though Google Inc. is developing a similar concept.

VineMe, an online site founded by Josh Fleming, Tony Muse and Chris Taulborg with consulting from Dwolla Corp. founder Ben Milne, launched in March. The premise is for users to upload photographs to tell stories about a person, place or thing throughout a timeline, combining photos from the past and present through “vines.”

Google earlier this month launched a similar photo-sharing smartphone application, which is available only by invitation.

“We think our product’s better, and we’re out to prove it,” Fleming said.

What makes VineMe different, he added, is the concept of a photo timeline.

“I think there’s a lot of photo apps and photo sites right now that are able to address the issue of time, but they struggle with anything other than right now and what you are going to be doing in two minutes,” Fleming said. “There’s no real sense of history and where people have been. That’s what we think is a big difference.”

VineMe is actively pursuing first-round funding to help build the company. Fleming also promised an announcement next week for account users that will be “a pretty big deal.”

He believes VineMe will be able to stand the test, and points out that there are obvious similarities between the two services, including the logos and the concepts.

Did Google’s Photovine draw from VineMe’s ideas in developing the app?

“I would say that it has crossed our minds,” Fleming said.
