Water Works to raise rates 7 percent
The Des Moines Water Works board has approved a 7 percent increase in water rates planned to go into effect April 1.
A public hearing on the 2019 budget is set for 3:30 p.m. Nov. 27 at 2201 George Flagg Parkway.
Water Works CEO and General Manager Bill Stowe said it’s hard to assess how the rates will affect businesses, because water use varies so much among them. But as an example, a large insurance company might use 1 million gallons a month, which would mean paying an additional $198 monthly to cover the rate increase.
A family of four using 7,500 gallons a month would pay $2.33 more a month.
The proposed 2019 budget includes $67.9 million of operating revenue. Operating expenses would be $46 million, an increase of $2.6 million, primarily due to increases in the cost of labor and benefits, chemicals and utilities.
