Going scuba diving and performing community service projects can work up an appetite. Fortunately, about 65 Central Campus marine biology students had Dannette Huggins to cook for them during their three-week trip to Florida earlier this year.

Huggins, a loan service representative with Wells Fargo Home Mortgage in West Des Moines, was awarded 2-1/2 weeks of additional company-paid time off in March to pursue the volunteer project this year. She was one of 20 employees Wells Fargo chooses each year from throughout the country for the award, and the only one from Greater Des Moines chosen this year.

“I started out as a chaperone diver,” said Huggins, who has gone on the trip each of the previous five years with her husband, Joel. The group tent-camps along the coast, from Cedar Key south to Key Largo, combining diving trips with community service projects such as working at local animal hospitals. This year, Huggins served as one of the primary cooks during the trip, serving meals from a 30-foot trailer converted into a galley. Normally, she gets to dive with the students, but didn’t get to this year, she said.

“I basically want to be there to fill a comfort zone for the students that they feel safe during the trip,” she said. “We have several events during the years so I get to meet the students and the parents, so by the time of the trip they have a basic idea of the people who will be leading the trip. … It helps the kids increase their leadership skills, and they have to learn to work together for a lot of the community projects they do on the trip.”
