The city of West Des Moines this summer is conducting a partial special census to get a more accurate count of its population in growing parts of the city. Residents in areas that will be counted will get mailings from the federal government in June and July that include a 12-digit code that can be used to complete the census online. Online responses will be taken until approximately the end of July. Census officials estimate that field representatives, all with photo ID badges, will go door-to-door in mid-August to meet with those who have not completed the survey online. Residents are encouraged to complete the census form so that West Des Moines can document the city’s growth and qualify for additional funds to pay for services such as street repairs, public safety, schools, hospitals and services for seniors, according to a news release. The partial special census will cost the city $405,000. If the count shows West Des Moines’ population has increased, the city could receive an additional $5.6 million in revenue from the Road Use Tax between 2026 and 2030, the release said. Census workers are being hired by the federal government to help with conducting the special count. For more information about the special census or to apply to be a census worker, click here.
