Development of an Innovation and Learning Center at Roosevelt High School will begin the month after $1.1 million was raised by a foundation that supports the Des Moines school.

The Theodore Roosevelt High School Foundation conducted a multi-year capital campaign to pay for the center that will replace the school’s existing nearly 60-year-old library. Demolition of the library space will begin this month, with work on the center continuing through spring. Construction of the new center is expected to be completed by the start of the 2024-25 school year.

The capital campaign included donations from MidAmerican Energy Co., Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino and Polk County. Also, more than 400 individual donors contributed to the campaign.

“The $1.1 million investment will transform our library and provide students access to a state-of-the-art facility to foster collaboration, creativity and critical thinking skills,” Steve Schappaugh, Roosevelt’s principal, said in a prepared statement. “The investment builds upon the exciting improvements we’re fostering at Roosevelt in academics and activities.”

The center will serve as a hub for the school, located at 4419 Center St. The center will feature a mix of public, semi-private and private workspaces. The project will transform an underutilized space into a welcoming center for students, faculty, parents and alumni, according to a news release.
