The structural condition of nearly 1,800 Iowa bridges is "basically intolerable," including more than 140 in the Des Moines metro area, according to data from federal highway officials.

Des Moines Register: The structural condition of nearly 1,800 Iowa bridges is “basically intolerable,” including more than 140 in the Des Moines metro area, according to data from federal highway officials. Among Iowa’s many bridges in poor condition is one in Des Moines that carries Second Avenue across Birdland Drive just north of the Des Moines River. Cars cross it more than 18,000 times a day, yet it’s rated “basically intolerable requiring high priority of corrective action” by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
