Trend: Starting in 2016, Central Iowa — including the Des Moines metropolitan area and Ames — will begin an unprecedented rise in entrepreneurial activities and innovation. This trend will continue to increase through 2020, and the results will carry economic growth for the region for the next decade.

Impact: In order to compete in an increasingly competitive and global environment, innovation is rapidly becoming the differentiator for sustainable success. This “innovation” takes many forms, from new corporate investments to new product innovation to new forms of business intelligence, but it is most noticeable in the form of new startup activity.

A natural consequence of increased innovation is the rise in the number of startups. We are just starting to see this activity pick up in the Des Moines metro area and Ames right now. With the establishment of the Startup Factory in the ISU Research Park, the Global Insurance Accelerator in the East Village, APEX in Waukee and Gravitate in Des Moines, we are seeing early signs of this entrepreneurial resurgence.

2016 will be the year this trend will become an increasingly hot topic, and one that companies in Iowa and the region will need to engage in to make the metro area an economic growth center for the next decade.

What are ways that people and companies can engage in this rising trend? By connecting to the various initiatives listed previously, people and companies can engage in many ways. From becoming an investor, a mentor, a customer, an adviser, or becoming an entrepreneur yourself, the opportunities are almost endless. In addition, established companies can engage with these innovation centers to help them create new products, establish new processes or gain better intelligence on their customers, just to name a few.
