A $25 million sports complex is being planned for 60 acres of West Des Moines farmland located along Grand Avenue, just west of Interstate 35 and the Des Moines Area Community College West Campus.

 The project is an effort of the Iowa Ice Sports Foundation, the Iowa Soccer Association, the city of West Des Moines and an as yet unnamed corporate sponsor.

 West Des Moines City Manager Tom Hadden said the only city funds that will be used for the project will come from hotel-motel tax revenues.

 The complex will be operated by a nonprofit organization.

 Under roof, the complex will feature an ice arena with two sheets of ice and an adjoining field house that will have 90,000 square feet of field turf as well as basketball courts and other facilities. At some point, additional outdoor soccer fields will be added to the complex, and there is room to expand all facilities, indoors and outdoors.

 “It’s going to be a really active place, sustained by ice hockey and soccer groups. The city of West Des Moines will program additional recreational opportunities,” Hadden said. “This will be a regional attraction that will serve a need for the tremendously growing sports of ice hockey and soccer.”

 The project is “exactly” the kind of use anticipated by state lawmakers for hotel-motel tax revenues, Hadden said, pointing out that it is an economic development that will benefit Greater Des Moines and attract participants from cities across the Midwest.

 “We’re really excited about this opportunity,” he said.

 The West Des Moines City Council will be asked to approve a memorandum of understanding with the corporate sponsor in the next few weeks.
