The Waukee City Council approved an $86.8 million budget Monday for fiscal 2020, which begins July 1, that maintains the current property tax levy at $13.40 per $1,000 of taxable valuation and provides $26.7 million for capital improvements, business and proprietary expenses of $22.2 million and operating expenses of $16.1 million. Capital improvement spending includes $9.6 million for the extension of 10th Street and $2.2 million to build the new Sunrise Drive to accommodate the city’s second high school, work on a community park and youth sports complex near the new high school, additional improvements in the Kettlestone area, preparations, including land purchases, for the expansion of City Hall and the final year of improvements on the city library. The city plans to fill five full-time public safety positions and create the position of assistant parks and recreation director. Waukee currently has a full-time staff of 112. Local option sales tax revenues will be used for a range of parks projects. The council also will vote on increases to water and wastewater rates and a decrease to the solid waste rate that will result in a net increase of $2.35 to the monthly utility bill of the average Waukee household.
