Youth Policy Institute of Iowa, DMACC partner in youth financial literacy program
A new partnership between Youth Policy Institute of Iowa and Des Moines Area Community College will mean greater financial success for many Iowa youths who have been in foster care, the organizations announced. YPII is the lead Iowa agency for the Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative and has administered the Opportunity Passport financial education program in Greater Des Moines since 2005. Effective Feb. 1, Opportunity Passport is housed and managed by the Evelyn K. Davis Center for Working Families, which is on the DMACC Urban Campus near downtown Des Moines. Opportunity Passport is a financial capability and asset-building strategy aimed at advancing the economic well-being of young people transitioning from foster care to adulthood. Participants are provided financial education; connection to, and experience with, the banking system through a personal savings account; and the opportunity to receive matching funds for the purchase of education, housing, health care, transportation and other specified assets. Funded in part by United Way of Central Iowa, Opportunity Passport serves about 140 young people in the Des Moines area each year.
