MercyOne Population Health Services Organization has named Dr. Ernesto Vazquez as chief medical officer. In this newly created position, Vazquez will provide clinical leadership to support population health strategies and clinical integration across MercyOne’s system of health services. He will work to enhance clinical services and programs and serve as a medical liaison for physician-to-physician evidence-based guidelines to enhance care quality as well as cost management. MercyOne PHSO, previously known as Mercy ACO, was renamed in late 2018 to reflect all the services it provides. ACOs are a model in which providers can share in savings generated by providing more cost-effective care, but also require health care providers to share in the financial risks if costs continue to rise. In addition to managing the MercyOne Accountable Care Organizations, the department also manages the MercyOne Partnered Provider Network and MercyOne Business Solutions. Vazquez has practiced at MercyOne Clive Family Medicine Clinic since 2011; he was previously a primary care physician with Summit Medical Center in Hermitage, Tenn. He is a medical school graduate of the University of Texas Southwest and completed his internship and residency within the Mercy Mayo Family Practice Residency Program in Iowa.
