The latest addition to the build out of the Village of Ponderosa is an extended stay hotel designed to have an appeal to environmentally aware travelers.
The Element Hotel, described as an incubator brand of Starwood Hotels & Resorts, is under construction at Market Street and South Prairie View Drive. The developer is Silverwest Hotels LLC, a two-year-old company based in Denver. CEO Ed Mace said this is the second Element branded hotel the company has developed, though there are 22 that have opened.
Mace said the hotel, called Element West Des Moines, will be designed and operated under standards suitable for a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification, but it is doubtful that the developers will go to the expense of seeking the designation.
The 110-room, four-story hotel has an estimated valuation of $11 million. Silvercrest paid $1.4 million for the property in October 2015 to an entity operated by Amit Goel, the Texas developer who purchased the remaining bank-owned parcels at Village of Ponderosa in 2014 from Great Western Bank and has set in motion what is primarily a residential development designed to attract people who would otherwise be inclined to live in downtown Des Moines.
Mace said Element West Des Moines will serve large firms, such as Principal Financial Group Inc., who bring people to Greater Des Moines for training sessions, as well as travelers with families. Each room will have a kitchenette.
The limited-service hotel will offer healthy food selections, bright rooms that emphasize natural lighting, a pool and tub area and a fitness center. It should open in May or June 2017.
