Tahira Hira, a professor of personal finance and consumer economics at Iowa State University, has been recognized for vetting the content of www.nysemoneysense.com, a new New York Stock Exchange Euronext Web site aimed at helping consumers improve their money-management skills and knowledge. Personal-finance topics such as earning, spending, saving and borrowing are presented on the site, which is intended to connect consumers with a variety of leading sources and experts in the financial industry. Hira is chair of the NYSE Euronext Financial Literacy Advisory Committee.

West Des Moines-based FBL Financial Group Inc. will announce its first-quarter 2010 earnings on May 5. FBL will post the first quarter earnings release and financial supplement on its Web site at www.fblfinancial.com. A conference call to discuss earnings will be held at 10 a.m. Iowa time on May 6.

The Salisbury House Foundation announced the addition of three directors to that nonprofit’s board. Bruce Kelley, president and CEO of EMC Insurance Cos., Brian Clark, principal at Confluence Landscape Architecture, and Francis Boggus, Iowa Great Places coordinator for the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, were elected to three-year terms.

A charity tennis exhibition that was slated for Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena has been postponed. The Miracle Match Foundation hopes to announce a new date for the event, which was organized to raise money for the Miracle Match Foundation, Blank Children’s Hospital and Variety –

The Children’s Charity. Bill Przybysz, the foundation’s president and founder, said the exhibition was postponed due to the financial backers’ inability to meet its contractual obligation.

Des Moines was named a Five Star Food Town in Midwest Living magazine’s most recent “Best of the Midwest” issue. The glossy publication, which highlights the Midwest’s “five top food towns,” featured chef George Formaro for his work with Centro, Django and Gateway Market. Bistro Montage, Miyabi 9, La Mie, Uncle Wendell’s BBQ, 801 Steak & Chop House and the Downtown Farmers Market were also given a nod. Other Five Star towns included Madison, Wis., Bloomington, Ind., and Traverse City and Ann Arbor, Mich.

Historic Valley Junction’s Spring Gallery Night will take place April 9 from 5 to 9 p.m. Eight galleries will showcase new artwork by regional, national and international artists. It’s the 15th year for the community event, which is intended to support locally owned businesses and draw attention to the area. The event is free and open to the pubic.
