Equitable Building developer sentenced in asbestos case
Real estate developer Bobby Joe Knapp has been sentenced to 41 months in prison for conspiring to violate the federal Clean Air Act and its work practice standards during the renovation of the Equitable Building.
He also was ordered to pay a $12,500 fine and perform 300 hours of community service during two years of supervised probation after his release from prison. Knapp pleaded guilty March 18 to one count of conspiracy to violate the Clean Air Act and one count of failing to remove all regulated material containing asbestos from the Equitable Building before beginning the renovation project.
Russell Coco, construction supervisor on the project, pleaded guilty to the same counts.
