The metal roofing credited for stopping a January fire from spreading through and completely destroying a 36-unit apartment building at 5515 Vista Drive in West Des Moines will be showcased for 10 years. Funded in part by a grant by the U.S. Department of Energy via the Iowa Office of Energy Independence, Sun Prairie’s metal roofing showroom is intended to promote energy-efficient building practices, and demonstrate how such materials may reduce Iowa’s dependence on foreign oil and increase property values. With 3,000 residents, Sun Prairie is one of the largest apartment communities in Iowa and was the first in the state to limit cigarette smoking to designated buildings. Beginning July 1, smoking at Sun Prairie will only be allowed in designated outdoor smoking areas. The metal roofing showroom is open to the public.
