No budget resolve in Minnesota
Visitors to Iowa’s northern neighbor will find highway rest stops closed this weekend.
The Minnesota government shut down today after budget talks by that state’s lawmakers broke down, CNNMoney.com reported.
As questions lingered about how to close a $3.6 billion budget shortfall, Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton and Republican leaders who control the Legislature spent hours behind closed doors this week trying to work out a way to avoid the state’s second shutdown in six years.
But a compromise on whether to increase taxes or make spending cuts couldn’t be reached in time, meaning that only a limited assortment of state services will be in operation over the busy holiday weekend.
In 2005, Minnesota’s government partially shut down for eight days after budget negotiations failed during Tim Pawlenty’s governorship.
