Facebook Inc. has announced that it will begin charging businesses for the free Offers capacity that it began offering earlier this year, Reuters reported Thursday.

The Offers capacity allows a business to offer deals to people who are fans of or who have “liked” the business’s page. The offer runs in the users’ news feed and allows them to print a voucher to bring the the store for a discounted deal.

Facebook will require merchants to pay at least $5 on related ads to promote each Facebook Offer to a targeted audience of fans and friends of fans. The cost will vary, based on the size of a company’s Facebook pages.

Since Facebook went public in May, the company has been under pressure to monetize more aspects of its giant social medium.

“We think this aligns incentives nicely,” Gokul Rajaram, director of product management for Facebook’s advertising and Pages businesses, told Reuters. “The best results on Facebook Offers will come from organic distribution plus paid distribution.”

Facebook will extend Offers to online businesses; previously it was available only to storefront businesses. It will also add bar codes to Offers so customers can redeem them more easily.
