Sales of electronic books have surpassed those of books in traditional formats, according to a study by the Association of American Publishers (AAP), CNNMoney.com reported.

Though there are some caveats – net sales data are compiled from publishers, not from book retailers, and some chose not to voluntarily submit data – the report said e-book sales in February totaled $90.3 million, a 202 percent increase from a year earlier.

“It’s not 100 percent, top to bottom, every single book out there,” said AAP spokeswoman Andi Sporkin. “But it’s a really good snapshot of what’s going on.”

The report said e-books in February were No. 1 “among all categories of trade publishing.” It was the first time e-books have topped traditional publishing formats as companies such as Barnes & Noble Inc., Sony Corp. and Borders Group Inc. continue to tout digital e-readers.

“The book business is changing more radically now, and quicker, than movies or music or newspapers have, because we’re doing it in a matter of months,” said Marc Parrish, a Barnes & Noble executive. “(The) next 24 months is when this business will totally shift.”
