CEO Steve Jobs will appear at an Apple Inc. conference next week, despite being on medical leave since January, and unveil new versions of Apple’s iOS and Mac operating system as well as a brand-new Web-based service called iCloud, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The company today described iCloud only as a “cloud services offering.” People familiar with the new feature have previously described it as an online service that would allow users to store personal memorabilia such as photos, music and videos in a virtual “locker” and access them from Internet-connected devices.

Jobs, who was diagnosed with a rare type of pancreatic cancer in 2004 and had a liver transplant two years ago, went on his second medical leave in two years in January.

In other technology news, Google Inc. said it will keep the focus of its Chrome operating system on notebooks and has no immediate plan to make it available on tablets or to merge it with its Android software for smartphones, Reuters reported.

Google has been making a push to get into the PC operating system arena dominated by Microsoft Corp. Google has seen Chrome web browser user numbers double over the past year to about 160 million, a senior executive for Chrome said.
