Kum & Go stores will disappear soon in Iowa

Maverik, which bought the Iowa convenience store chain in August 2023, has started putting its name on the stores. The Kum & Go store in Neola closed on July 18 and was expected to re-open Tuesday afternoon as a Maverik, a person who answered the phone at the store said.
Kum & Go locations in Adair, Walnut and Stuart are closed and will reopen Wednesday through Friday as Maverik. Kum & Go stores in the Greater Des Moines area will begin their makeover on Friday when the store at 400 Prairie Bluff Drive in Waukee closes. It is expected to reopen on July 29 as a Maverik convenience store.
Nearly 40 Kum & Go stores in Iowa will be rebranded between now and mid-October, according to Maverik’s website. Kum & Go has over 90 locations in Iowa. A spokesperson did not respond to a query about when the other Kum & Go stores will be rebranded.
Maverik began rebranding Kum & Go stores in other states in early 2024.
Kum & Go’s Iowa roots reach back to 1959 when William A. Krause and his father-in-law Tony Gentle opened a full-service gasoline station in Hampton, Iowa. The gas station began selling milk, bread and other food products in 1963. In 1965, the company became known as Kum & Go.
Kyle Krause, the son and grandson of Kum & Go’s founders, decided to sell the company in early 2023. At the time of the sale, Kum & Go had nearly 400 stores in 13 states.
Kum & Go customers with &Rewards will be able to switch to Maverick’s reward app. However, Kum & Go reward points won’t rollover with the change. Customers are encouraged to use their Kum & Go rewards at stores that haven’t yet been rebranded, according to the Maverik website.
