State launches ‘5210’ childhood obesity prevention campaign

The state of Iowa has launched a statewide initiative to combat childhood obesity. The campaign, called “5210 – Healthy Choices Count,” is a public-private partnership between the Healthiest State Initiative and the Iowa Department of Public Health. The nationally recognized childhood obesity prevention program focuses on the importance of four simple daily health habits: five or more servings of fruits and vegetables; two hours or less of screen time (television, computer, video games, phones); one hour or more of physical activity; and zero (or reduced) sugar-sweetened beverages. “Research has shown that children who have healthy eating habits, are physically active and spend less time in front of a screen do better in school,” Gov. Kim Reynolds said in a release. Nearly 30 percent of Iowa teens are overweight or obese, according to IDPH data. The 5210 campaign will include tool kits, social media, advertising, website content and community commitments. The state has not released any of these materials yet, but to see an overview of the 5210 program from Ohio, click here.
