Naig: Iowa preparing for avian flu

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig said increased biosecurity efforts at Iowa turkey, egg and chicken farms should help the state cope with the threat of low pathogenic avian influenza found in Missouri and Texas in recent weeks. Low pathogenicity avian influenza virus strains occur naturally in wild migratory waterfowl and shorebirds without causing illness. The illness can infect domestic poultry with little sign of illness. Naig said farmers should be careful during the spring waterfowl migration season and “remain diligent in their biosecurity efforts.”
