A good wind blows for Iowa State and Ames

Iowa State University and the city of Ames will begin buying wind-generated electricity this month from NextEra Energy Resources, a Florida company with eight wind farms in the state.

The university and the city have entered a 20-year agreement to buy electricity from a 100-turbine wind farm that NextEra operates near Zearing.

Under the agreement, Ames and Iowa State plan to buy 30 megawatts of output for the city and six megawatts for the university. That’s more than 15 percent of Ames’ electricity needs and about 10 percent of the power needed at Iowa State.

The January startup is no coincidence.

“Winter is the best time for wind energy in Iowa, and January is probably the peak month,” Jeff Witt, Iowa State’s assistant director of utilities, said in a news release.
