The Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation will host the public dedication of “A Monumental Journey,” a new major public art sculpture downtown, on Thursday at 11 a.m. The sculpture in the Hansen Triangle at Grand and Second avenues honors the legacy of 12 African-American lawyers who founded the National Bar Association in Des Moines in 1925. Juan Thomas, the association’s president, and Arthenia Joyner, former group president, politician and civil rights activist, will speak during the dedication ceremony. A public lecture with the artist, Kerry James Marshall, will be held later in the day at Sheslow Auditorium at Drake University at 6 p.m. To RSVP for the dedication ceremony, click here.
