A tablet a month can get expensive

Users of  tablet computers are spending much more money on those devices than smartphone owners spend on theirs, according to ABI Research.

Twenty-two percent of tablet users spend about $50 a month and 9 percent spend $100 or more.

“Tablets are quickly becoming the go-to transaction screen within the home,” ABI Research’s Jeff Orr said in a news release.

At the close of 2012, ABI Research estimated that nearly 200 million tablets had shipped worldwide since 2009 and an additional 1 billion tablets are forecast to ship over the next 5 years.

Logistics, such as price checking, using a coupon and location-based searches, consistently rank as the most common activities tablet users perform when shopping.

The actual amount of cannibalization that a tablet has on traditional print and TV consumption varies. Tablets are increasingly used in conjunction with other media types.
