ABI joins ‘Let America Lead’ coalition aimed at boosting HVACR exports
The Iowa Association of Business and Industry has joined a national coalition called Let America Lead. The organization was formed in July by the National Association of Manufacturers, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the American Chemistry Council and the American Council for Capital Formation. The organization’s goal is securing Trump administration support and U.S. Senate ratification of a provision known as the Kigali Amendment to the 1987 Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, an update to the environmental treaty that the Obama administration helped negotiate in 2016. The amendment, which has been ratified by 35 countries, would phase out the use of hydrofluorocarbons, which are used mainly in refrigeration and air conditioning and are thousands of times more potent than carbon dioxide in warming the atmosphere. An HVACR industry study cited by Let America Lead estimates ratifying the amendment would help create an additional 33,000 U.S. manufacturing jobs and 117,000 indirect jobs by 2027 because of U.S. leadership in eco-friendly technology. It would also increase manufacturing exports by $5 billion while reducing imports by nearly $7 billion to improve the balance of trade, according to the report. “As part of our commitment to grow Iowa’s economy, we support trade agreements that boost manufacturing here at home and open new markets abroad,” ABI President Mike Ralston said in a statement. ”The Kigali Amendment will help achieve both those goals.”
