The Mannheimer Award, named in tribute to Des Moines attorney and civil liberties advocate Robert Mannheimer, gives a $500 cash prize to young Iowans demonstrating passion for civil advocacy. Both recipients, actively involved in student-led advocacy groups, orchestrated student walkouts against SF 496, a law that prohibits most books depicting sex acts in grades K-12 and restricts materials referring to gender identity and sexual orientation in grades K-6. Key provisions of the law were recently blocked by a federal judge. Read more about the award winners here.
