Des Moines Register: The raft carrying Michael Jaramillo when an accident on Adventureland Park’s Raging River ride fatally injured him July 3 temporarily had been pulled from service earlier in the day because of a deflated air bladder, according to public records obtained by the Des Moines Register. It was one of several rafts that had been taken out of service because the bladders that keep them afloat had deflated, state amusement ride safety investigators said in a previously unreleased report. The raft carrying 11-year-old Michael and his family “immediately began taking on water as the ride began,” according to investigators. An attorney for Adventureland said neither problems with the air bladders nor taking on water would explain how a 1,700-pound raft with a metal plate on the bottom for ballast would capsize.
