An analysis of nearly 300 U.S. cities places Elkhart, Ind., as the top city where U.S. manufacturing is thriving, according to an analysis by AdvisorSmith Solutions Inc., a New York-based small business insurance firm. In 2019, the city, which with its surrounding cities produces more than half of all recreational vehicles in the United States, generated 584% more manufacturing jobs on a per capita basis than the average U.S. city. Waterloo, Iowa, the only Iowa city on the top 50 list, was ranked 30th. Manufacturing output in Waterloo declined by 6.4% between 2015 and 2019 and manufacturing employment grew by just 0.8%, however. The rankings of 294 cities were based on four key economic factors: manufacturing output growth rate, manufacturing output per capita, manufacturing location quotient, and manufacturing employment growth rate. In 2019, there were 12.8 million manufacturing jobs in the United States, up from 12.3 million in 2015.
