The Ankeny City Council on Monday evening approved an $89 million fiscal 2016 budget that includes a property tax rate decrease for a second consecutive year. The budget reduces the property tax rate from $11.90 to $11.85 per $1,000 of assessed value; the 5-cent reduction will be in the city’s debt service levy. In fiscal 2015, the property tax rate was reduced approximately 12.7 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation, which was a little more than 1 percent of the total property tax rate. Due to changes in the residential rollback and increases in solid waste, water and sewer rates, Ankeny homeowners will see an overall increase in property taxes, while business owners will see a decrease for the fiscal year beginning July 1. An owner of a $160,000 home will see an approximately $98 increase; the estimated decreased annual cost to a $1 million business is approximately $456.
