A steering committee comprised of nine members from Ankeny’s Park Board, City Council and citizens was established in April 2006 from a community-driven effort to lay out future parks and recreational facilities. RDG Planning and Design drafted concept designs based on community focus group input on valuable components and opportunities to improve existing parks and aquatics. By combining the designs with growth trends and demographics, a detailed, yet flexible plan was designed to guide future development. Plans for future projects included a layout for Prairie Trail park designs and possible designs and locations for a second community aquatic center.

The Ankeny City Council approved the adoption of the Parks & Facilities Comprehensive Plan at the Nov. 5 meeting; now park and facility plans can emerge within the CIP document and become eligible for funding.
