Travelers heading north in the metro area may want to consider a different route as the interchange at Interstate 35 and First Street in Ankeny is set to close for construction on May 27. The project will rebuild the interchange into a diverging diamond interchange, according to an Iowa Department of Transportation news release. First Street between Southeast Delaware Avenue and Southeast Creekview Drive will also be closed during the project. The work is expected to be complete in early November, weather permitting. The project will include removing all existing pavement, grading the roadbed, paving new lanes on East First Street, paving new ramps, and installing new signals, street lights and signs. Travelers wanting to exit at First Street in Ankeny will be detoured to Northeast 36th Street, and traffic on East First Street wanting to get on I-35 will be detoured to U.S. HIghway 69/North Ankeny Boulevard, to Northeast 36th Street, and then to I-35.
