The sixth annual Cloris Leachman Excellence in Theatre Arts Awards Ceremony will take place virtually this year at 7 p.m. on Aug. 30. The ceremony, hosted by local theater artist and musician Madison Ray, will honor the creative work of 10 local theater companies during the 2019-2020 theater season: Ankeny Community Theatre, Carousel Theatre of Indianola, Des Moines Community Playhouse, Des Moines Young Artists’ Theatre, Iowa Shakespeare Experience, Iowa Stage Theatre Company, Open Door Rep, Pyramid Theatre, Theatre Midwest and Urbandale Community Theatre. This year, the companies have chosen to forgo the traditional awards process chosen by volunteer judges, and instead honor each other with a “DIY Award” to recognize and support companies that were unable to stage any productions during the past season. Each award will highlight work companies have done throughout the nontraditional 2019-2020 season. More information will be available online.
