In April, 1,169 homes were sold in the Des Moines area, 11% more than the 1,0,51 sold in March when Iowa shut down thousands of businesses in an effort to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus. The number of homes sold in April outpaced by 17 the number sold a year ago, the association’s data show.
“April was a solid month considering the major impact of the pandemic,” Lance Hanson, the group’s president, said in a prepared statement. Real estate agents “quickly adapted their business practices to keep their clients and members of the public safe.”
The median price of a home sold in the Des Moines area remained at $215,000, the same as in March, according to the association. The average number of days homes were on the market was slightly less in April (61) compared with March (68).
Low interest rates for mortgages are helping keep buyers in the market, Hanson has previously said.
On Wednesday, for instance, the average rate on a 30-year-fixed-rate mortgage was 3.2%, according to NerdWallet.com.
