The Des Moines Art Center is moving closer to reaching its $34 million capital campaign goal, with a $900,000 challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation that is contingent upon the Art Center reaching its fundraising goal by June 30, 2009. As of March 15 the organization had raised $27.91 million, according to its May 2008 quarterly progress report.
The State Historical Society of Iowa also gave a $100,000 challenge grant that required the Art Center to raise an equal amount from private sources, which it has. That funding will help cover $700,000 in accessibility improvements, including a new elevator that will be added this fall to the east of its education entrance.
The entire campaign will cover $7.5 million in building preservation, $23.5 million for the Art Center’s general operating endowment and $3 million in annual operating income for the next two years. Other new improvements this year include the addition of MP3 players that will play audio-guided tours for selected artworks, and an enclosed back dock to help protect artwork that is shipped to and from the Art Center.
As of March 15, the Art Center also was more than halfway to its 4,000-donor campaign goal, with 2,690 donors.
