Athene Holding has responded to a regulatory notice from the California Department of Insurance that has proposed fines and the temporary closure of its subsidiary, Athene Annuity and Life Co., for allegedly failing to meet California service standards for approximately 50,000 life insurance policies, Reinsurance News reported. Since 2016, the regulator has received over 100 consumer complaints related to administration issues on a set of California life insurance policies that were reinsured to Accordia Life and Annuity Co. by Athene Annuity and Life, formerly known as Aviva USA. During the system transition, which was administered by a third-party subcontractor, Alliance-One Services, the policies were placed in a “restricted status,” which led to a number of processing issues. Athene officials said in a statement that Accordia Life and Alliance-One are financially responsible for the block of policies, but that it intends to work with the state to resolve the issue. The majority of the initial 200 employees of Accordia Life, a subsidiary of Global Atlantic Financial Group, were hired from Aviva USA’s former life insurance business when Accordia Life launched in Des Moines in May 2014.
