Ballet Des Moines has announced its virtual fall lineup, with organizers saying they are committed to keeping the arts alive in the community. The 2020-21 season includes collaborations with some of Des Moines’ world-class musicians: a world premiere production in partnership with the Belin Quartet, lighthearted and romantic jazz performed by Max Wellman and his band, and a new contemporary ballet set to the music of Schubert, performed by the Roseman Quartet based out of Ames. Additionally, a world premiere production of “Peter and the Wolf,” created to supplement distance learning arts curricula in conjunction with Des Moines Public Schools, will be created. Ballet Des Moines also announced that its presentation of Nutcracker will not appear onstage in December, but will “live on through a variety of virtual Nutcracker experiences, available later this fall.” According to the release, young dancers can learn choreography through online tutorials, receive costumes to create their own performance at home, have a tea party with the Sugarplum Fairy, and gain access to exclusive performance footage. A schedule of the fall season’s performances has not been set as organizers are working with Iowa Public Television about broadcast opportunities.
