BilT for a guitar virtuoso

Wilco lead guitarist Nels Cline started his career as a jazzman and became a rocker, and there’s a good chance the guitar he will be playing during the 80/35 festival was carved, glued and outfitted with a dizzying array of effects by BilT guitars in Des Moines. BilT is a company founded in 2009 by Tim Thelen, co-owner of The Lutherie Shop in the Drake University neighborhood, and Bill Henss, a builder of stringed instruments who gravitated to electric guitars. Cline told an interviewer a few years ago that Thelen approached him after a performance and offered to build him a guitar. “It was mind-blowing, and they charged me so little for it that I felt I had to buy more. They guilt-tripped me into it,” Cline said. The guitar was delivered at a Wilco show in Kansas. There have been several others. BilT guitars have shown up in the hands of other players at the Grammy Awards presentation and on “Saturday Night Live.” BilT guitars can be found here.  Read more about The Lutherie Shop atBusinessRecord.com.
