BNIM architects has received the American Institute of Architects’ Honor Award for Architecture for its work on the $35 million renovation of American Enterprise Group Inc.’s iconic headquarters in downtown Des Moines. The project is referred to as an “invisible” renovation because the building’s original systems were integrated with the original architecture, requiring substantial demolition of walls and finishes, which were then reconstructed. The project was one of 11 to receive the award out of about 350 entries. The eight-story AEG building was designed by Gordon Bunshaft and completed in 1965. It received an AIA Institute Honor Award for Architecture in 1967. In 1966, it was featured in Life magazine and deemed “the talk of the Midwest.”
