BNIM Architects’ Des Moines studio has received the Architectural Record Good Design is Good Business award for its work on the $35 million renovation of the American Enterprise Group headquarters at 601 Sixth Ave. in Des Moines. The renovation “embodies the purpose of the award — to celebrate successful collaborations between the client and design team, which elevate the business plan, the user experience, and the bottom line,” according to a release. The building was designed by noted architect Gordon Bunshaft and received national attention after it opened in 1965. BNIM crafted a rehabilitation that emphasized creating a safe and healthy workplace while preserving the building’s unique design. BNIM principal Rod Kruse has said the goal of designers and the construction team was to carry out a rehabilitation that left the impression that the building had been untouched. BNIM also received the 2016 American Institute of Architects Honor Award for Architecture, the same award that was bestowed on the building’s designers in 1967. Here’s whatArchitecture Record had to say about BNIM’s work.
