Iowa high school students will for the first time be able to earn free college credits during the summer months, through a new Summer College Credit Program being developed by the Iowa Department of Education. As part of its meeting agenda on Wednesday, the Iowa State Board of Education will consider a final rule for the program, which will provide funding for community colleges to begin offering courses this summer. The rule follows an appropriation of $600,000 the Legislature made in 2018 to expand the Senior Year Plus program, which makes college classes available during the school year, in support of the Future Ready Iowa program. The board has requested an immediate effective date for the rule so that community colleges can have programs in place by this summer. Department spokeswoman Staci Hupp said that in general, enrollment for classes will open in March, with classes starting at the end of May or early June. The actual enrollment windows will be set by participating school districts, she said.
