BPC announces Michael Morain as new magazine division editor
Morain will assume editorial responsibility of the magazine division, including dsm and ia magazines and e-newsletters, Inclusion and Lifting the Veil publications, and dsm’s Home Design Awards, LGBTQ Legacy Leader Awards, Sages Over 70, Discover Diverse Des Moines, and Lifting the Veil events.
“Michael brings strong journalistic instincts and stellar storytelling skills to the role, as well as a love for Greater Des Moines,” Riccelli said. “I’m thrilled that he’ll be working with our team to elevate and celebrate our community through the magazine and all dsm products.”
Michael has had a distinguished career as a journalist and communications professional, most recently as communications manager for the Department of Cultural Affairs. Earlier, he worked at the Des Moines Register, where he covered arts and culture in print, video and social media. Michael earned a BA in international studies from Graceland University, an MS in journalism from Northwestern University and is a two-time fellow of the National Endowment of the Arts Institute in Arts Journalism.
An active volunteer and board member for various organizations, he was a founding judge of the Cloris Awards, is a member of the Des Moines Gay Men’s Choir, and was the Register’s co-host of RAGBRAI.
“Michael’s extensive experience in community journalism, along with his passion for and knowledge of Greater Des Moines and Iowa make him a great fit for our company and culture,” said Chris Conetzkey, group publisher, to whom Morain will report.
Michael will join BPC at the beginning of 2023. We are confident he will honor current editor-in-chief Riccelli’s legacy, uphold her standards for quality journalism, and continue to evolve dsm and ia magazines to inform and inspire our communities.
