BRIEF ON THE RECORD: Risking life and limb for the Speedway
Iowa Speedway President Jimmy Small wasn’t fazed by a little snow. Last night during the height of the season’s first major storm, Small tweeted out an offer to personally shovel the driveway of the first person to call, mention his tweet and buy four season tickets.
His tweet garnered 45 retweets, a mention on the local broadcast news, and an article in the Cedar Rapids Gazette.
Best yet, he followed through on his promise. That night. Small drove out to Lynville during the storm to shovel the driveway of the winning fans. They let him off easy and only made him shovel their front walk.
I just assume that with the success of Small’s marketing campaign, personalized CEO service-based promotions will be the hot marketing strategy of 2015.
Imagine: Suku Radia pulling weeds for opening a new Bankers Trust account, Larry Zimpleman raking leaves for starting a Principal Financial Group 401k or Randy Edeker cooking a family dinner for buying groceries at Hy-Vee.
Small’s a smart and good guy. We wrote about him last year – read the article – and I had a chance to talk with him a bit at last year’s Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau celebrity golf outing. All said, a fun idea and not a bad return on investment for a little labor. And I’m sure for a car guy like Small, some fun driving in the snow.
Just don’t hold your breath the next time it snows for any Business Record membership deals – I don’t own a shovel.
