Broadlawns Medical Center has begun construction of its first off-campus clinic, which will serve residents on the east side of Des Moines.

The family medicine clinic, located at 2508 E. University Ave., will also have an urgent care center along with X-ray and laboratory facilities on-site, and will be staffed by approximately six physicians, said Jody Jenner, Broadlawns CEO.

Broadlawns has been planning the nonprofit clinic for about the past two years and purchased the property in July 2015.

“First of all, we saw that there were gaps in care to citizens in that part of the community and just wanted to provide better service to that area,” Jenner said. “Second, many of our patients live in that area of the community already, and we just wanted to make access easier for those folks.”

The expected cost of the 10,000-square-foot facility is about $5.5 million, including equipment and architectural fees. Reserves have been set aside to pay for it, Jenner said.

Shive-Hattery is the architect for the project, which is being built by Graham Construction. The clinic is expected to open in November.

“We obviously think it will be a very successful clinic and really serve the needs of the residents on the east side,” Jenner said.
