Broadlawns to build clinic near Drake, replacing university’s student health center
Broadlawns Medical Center will build a clinic on the corner of 29th Street and University Avenue to better serve residents in the Drake University neighborhood and members of the university community. The announcement was made during a joint news conference with Broadlawns and Drake officials on Monday. Construction is scheduled to begin in May 2022 with completion set for August 2023. According to a news release, the 12,000-square-foot-clinic will replace the American Republic Student Health Center on the Drake campus. The student health and counseling facility serves more than 900 patients a year, with about 2,700 patient visits. Once the new Broadlawns clinic is built, the current clinic will be converted to another use. Drake is entering into a long-term lease on the property at 29th Street and University with Broadlawns. Drake University President Marty Martin said the university chose Broadlawns as its partners after a competitive bidding process. The clinic will be open to the general public and accessible to Drake students and employees. According to the release, the clinic will fill a gap in primary care providers in the community and expand student health services for the university. The clinic will provide family medicine, urgent care, mental health care and a rotation of specialties. According to the release, which cites the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, the Drake neighborhood is part of the only medically underserved area in Polk County.
