Broadlawns Medical Center announced today that it will expand its mental health services by opening a psychiatric urgent care center at its Des Moines campus at 1801 Hickman Road, effective June 4. Services at the clinic will include mental health assessments, medication management, therapeutic counseling and coordination of services for health care and basic needs. A medical provider will be available at Broadlawns Psychiatric Urgent Care Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. “The addition of a psychiatric urgent care at Broadlawns is a natural extension of the Crisis Observation Center,” said Steve Johnson, Broadlawns behavioral health administrator. “We believe this is the first psychiatric urgent care in Iowa, and the addition of this clinic will provide a more immediate care option for mental health patients.” Also on June 4, Broadlawns will begin offering electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) procedures for patients with major depression for whom traditional therapies and medications have been ineffective. The procedure, conducted under general anesthesia, entails transferring small electric currents through the brain to reverse symptoms of major depression.
