Business Council survey finds strong talk of increased sales
The Iowa Business Council’s quarterly economic survey, released today, found three-quarters of its 26 members expect increased sales over the next six months. Half of the council members also are looking for an increase in both capital spending and employment in the same period. The overall index climbed to 63 from 59. The positive news was balanced a bit by this: More than 80 percent of those surveyed said they are having trouble hiring and keeping quality workers. The council, a nonprofit organization representing the chief decision-makers of major Iowa employers, has pledged to hire 30,000 interns, externs and apprentices by 2025 in an effort to alleviate the problem. Members include the top executives of the largest businesses in the state, the three regent university presidents, and the president and CEO of Iowa’s largest banking association. Council members meet as a group at least four times a year.
